Road Tubeless
I have just bought a set of Alpha 340 road rims, and was wondering if it is okay to run them with regular tyres and tubes?
The Alpha rims can be run with a standard clincher tire and a tube.
Can I convert any road wheel to tubeless?
Any 700c road rim can be converted with our road tubeless bundle. Deep dish rims may require a valve extender.
Can I convert any road tire to tubeless?
No, currently you may only use Hutchinson Tubeless Tires. We expect to see tires available from other manufactures in the future.
What pressure should I run my tubeless road tires at?
Rider weight will determine your optimal tire pressure. Please follow the tire manufacturer’s pressure recommendations on their packaging. Hutchinson recommends between 87 and 116 psi.
Do I need to use rim tape on sealed rim like the Mavic Kyserium?
No you do not need to use rim tape.
Sealant
How much sealant should I use?
For a standard 2.0” mountain bike tire, we recommend 2 ounces of sealant. You may want to use up to 3 ounces in larger mountain bike tires or for the initial setup in tires that you find difficult to seal. For road and cyclocross tires we also recommend 2 ounces.
How long will the sealant last in my tire?
Stan’s Tire Sealant will stay liquid in a bike tire with a thin casing for two to seven months on average. Riding in arid climates or storing the bike in a hot area will require more frequent monitoring of sealant levels. One quart will seal approximately 16 tires and one pint will seal approximately 8 tires.
Will Stan’s sealant freeze, at what temperature?
Special anti-freeze agents allow the sealant to be used in environments as cold as -20°F.
Will Stan's Sealant work for UST and other Tubeless tire applications?
Yes, put in 1 scoop and enjoy the puncture resistance while avoiding the hassles of re-inflating leaky Tubeless tires!
What is the sealant shelf-life?
We recommend keeping the bottle tightly sealed, out of direct sunlight and in a cool place, in which case the shelf-life is indefinite.
I heard there is ammonia in your sealant and it is bad for my tire and or rim?
Any trace amount of ammonia in Stan’s sealant will evaporate soon after it is injected into the tire. We have found no damaging effects from our sealant even after years of use. Any oxidation in you rim will just as likely be caused by riding in wet conditions or the humidity in the air.
What tire should I use?
Most mountain bike tires will work well with Stan’s rims or Stan’s tubeless conversion. A very small number of tires are not recommended. Please check the link below for further information.
Will using your sealant void the warranty on my Kenda tire?
Using our sealant will void your tire warranty with certain manufacturers. Stan’s NoTubes Sealant will not damage your tire.
How do I get your sealant out of my tires or tubes?
Simply wash the sealant out with water. Stan’s sealant is biodegradable.
Stan’s Rims
What do I need to run a Stan's rim tubeless i.e rim tape, rim strip?
All our rims need are our yellow tape (21mm for Olympic, Alpine & Alpha 25mm for all others) a Universal Valve Stem (35mm for MTN and 44mm for road) and of course Stan's Sealant.
What makes the ZTR rims different from one another?
The 355 and Arch are rim brake compatible with a fully anodized brake track. The 355 is available with an ABT (Advanced Brake Track) sidewall in 26” rims. The Arch and Arch EX are a stronger cross country rim for aggressive riding. The Crest and Alpine are lightweight cross country rims and the Flow is an all mountain heavy duty rim. The Flow has the widest profile to enhance performance of the biggest tires. The 29er Race Gold and Podium MMX rims are Stan’s lightest cross country race rims and are only sold prebuilt in-house. The Alpha is Stan’s Road and Cyclocross rim. All our rims incorporate BST, Stan’s Bead Socket Technology for the best tubeless performance.
Tubeless Conversions
Can I convert my standard mountain bike rim to tubeless with tape and valve only?
No. Without a rubber rim strip your tires will burp air very easily when ridden at normal mountain bike and cyclocross bike air pressures. The rubber rim strip creates a second bead lock between the tire bead and the bottom of the rim. This prevents the tire from loosing air when a force on the side of the tire pushes it away from the sidewall of the rim.
Which conversion kit or rim strip do I need for my rim?

My rim is drilled for presta valves but the rim strips you recommend only come with Schrader valves, what do I do?
All that is required to make your rims compatible with Schrader valves is a 21/64” drill bit. Drilling the valve hole is fairly common and will not affect the rim’s strength. By having a Schrader sized hole, you will be able to use any kind of tube should the need ever arise.
My rim is drilled for Schrader valves but the recommended rim strips for my rims only come with presta valves, what do I do?
There is no problem using a presta valve in a Schrader sized hole. If you like, there are reducer bushings available at most local shops. The bushings can be plastic, rubber, or metal.
Tubeless Rims
How Can I Easily Add Sealant to my UST Wheelset?
If you are satisfied with the holding power of your tubeless rim, we offer a UST Tubeless Valve Stem that features a removable core and works with both standard and tubeless tires. This will allow you to quickly and easily add sealant in tubeless rims without removing your tire
I have UST rims and want to use standard tires, what do I do?
When non-UST tires on UST rims we recommend a rim strip. First it makes inflation much easier. If you are using an air compressor, this is likely not an issue. A rim strip will also prevent/reduce burping of air pressure at the rim/tire bead interface under heavy side loads. The rim strip fills the space between the tire beads and the rim "benches" and creates a tighter seal. If you are confident in the ability of your current tires to hold air without burping in your UST rims you my purchase Stan’s sealant to make your tires air-tight. You may also purchase Stan’s UST Valve stem with removable core to make adding sealant to your tires and inflating your tires easier. If you choose a rim strip our Standard or Olympic rim strips (do not enlarge the inner valve hole) are easiest to inflate, have a removable valve core for adding sealant, and create a tighter seal at the bead. The Standard rim strip is thicker and creates the best seal (weight about 56g), while the Olympic rim strip is a little bit thinner, but doesn't create as tight of a seal (weight about 38g).

Wheel Building
Why don’t you use eyelets in building your rims?
We feel that because of the high quality of modern materials eyelets are not necessary.
What is the recommended spoke tension when building a wheel using Stan’s Rims?
We recommend that you use a tension of between 90-100kgf on e the drive side. Alpha rims use a tension of 125kgf.
Why don’t you build your wheels with brass nipples?
Aluminum nipples are lighter than brass (20 grams less per 32 nipples). We also feel that modern aluminum nipples are strong enough to build a high quality wheel. Brass nipples are available for wheel builds and are recommended for corrosive environments such as salted winter streets and Oceanside riding.
